Traditional oil painting techniques scaled down to a small format (2.5 x 3.5 inches) in an alla
prima method of painting will be the focus of these workshops. There will be class discussion
as well as daily demonstrations of color theory, composition and brush work. We will use
complementary color palettes which naturally yield harmonious paintings. The workshop
follows the principals described in Big Art,Small Canvas. Still lifes will be done from life and
landscapes from photos. Individual attention will be given to all level of students
A note about the advantages of painting in miniature: shipping is cheaper, storage is less of a problem, paints supplies
last longer, and it is much less stress on the body. Much more can be learned in a shorter amount of time since
finishing a piece isn’t too time consuming. For those people who are allergic or sensitive to oil paint this is a great
alternative since so little paint is used and no mediums are needed to thin the paint.I recommend using Masters Brush
Cleaner to clean brushes. (Since small brushes are used they are easily cleaned with this turpless cleaner.)
